What is SportStake 13?
SportStake 13 is a soccer pool competition run by the South Africa National Lottery. The aim is to predict the outcome of each of 13 predetermined soccer fixtures in order to win money from a prize pool.
There are midweek and weekend games to play, with prize draws taking place on Monday and Friday each week and the results are published online.
How to play SportStake 13
In order to play, you need to complete an entry form. Entry forms can either be online or in paper form.
The entry form has 13 lines, one for each game. On each line, there are three boxes marked “1”, “X” and “2”. To choose the home team to win, you would fill in the “1” box with a pencil. If you want to choose a drawn result for the match outcome, fill in the “X” box, and if you choose the away team to be the winner of the game, fill in the box marked with “2”.
The cost to enter is if you choose one match prediction outcome per game is R2. However, you might decide that in one or more of the games, you’d like to make a hedge by also making more than one selection. For example, either team winning.
In this scenario, you can mark the “1” and “2” boxes for that game. This effectively gives you a second entry into the prize pool, and the price of that ticket is multiplied by the price of a ticket (R2). So the cost to enter would now be R4.
In case you decided to do this on a few lines, the price of your entry ticket could go pretty high. For example, if you wanted to choose 2 outcomes in 5 of the matches, your entry would cost you R2x2x2x2x2 = R32. This can get out of hand pretty quickly if you aren’t careful, so there comes a point where doing too many is probably not worth the risk! The maximum cost of a bet slip entry is R2000.
Oh, and another thing, the final outcome is maybe not always what you might think. It is defined as the score after 90 minutes of normal play and extra time (where a match goes to extra time) but never penalty shootouts. So, if a cup final game finishes at 1-1 after 90 minutes and extra time, a draw (‘X’) is the result that will be counted as the winning one.

SportStake 13 Propick Tips
You can also decide to let a computer make your midweek and weekend predictions. This option is called Propick and does not require you to do any thinking about the fixtures. It will make all of the 13 selections for you. This can also be done online or at a physical retail outlet.
However, Propick is probably a bit more random than what you truly need. While it is true that Sportstake 13 Propick entries had wins in the past, it may well be more to do with the law of averages than good advice. Just think about the number of Propick tickets that are sold.

How to Win SportStake 13
The more accurate predictions that you get, the more you will win. However, you need to get at least 10 out of 13 correct predictions in order to join the pool winners.
There are four prize divisions in Sportstake 13, creatively named Prize Divisions 1,2,3 and 4.
If you are clever or lucky enough to predict ALL 13 matches correctly, you’ll be a winner of Prize Division 1. Others who win will also share in this prize pool fund. If no one wins it, the pool fund is rolled over to the next draw.
Should you correctly predict 12 of the 13 results, you will be included in the winners of Prize Division 2. If no one predicted 12 correctly, half of this fund rolls down to Prize Division 3 and the other half to Prize Division 4.
You need to have predicted 11 correct results to join the winnings from Prize Division 3, or have picked 10 right to be a winner of the Prize Division 4 prize pool.
That’s how you win. If by virtue of some freakish game results, no one has predicted 10, 11 or 12 of the fixtures correctly (i.e. Prize Divisions 2,3 and 4) then the pool funds from all of them roll over to Division 1 of the next game.
What are the Payouts like?
Payouts depend on different factors for each game. The size of the pool can vary each time due to possible rollovers and the number of players involved.
Typically, though, a sole winner of the Division 1 pool might expect something in the region of R350,000. The other pools usually have many more than 1 winner, so you never can tell what you’ll get.
As a rule of thumb or guideline, there tends to be a magnitude of at least ten times the number of winners in Division 3 compared with Division 2.
It’s also important to note the allocations for each of the pool funds, as the distribution is not an equal 25% for each. 30% of the entire Sportstake 13 pool fund is allocated to Prize Division 1. The size of Division 2’s fund is just 15% of the total, while Division 3 winners share 20% of the total pool.
The biggest allocation of the pool fund is reserved for Prize Division 4, which gets 35% of it. Just as well, really, as there are usually a lot of winners in it!

What are the odds of winning SportStake 13?
The mathematical chances of winning Prize Division 1 by getting all 13 per single entry are 1 in 1,594,323. However, if you know your soccer, it drastically improves those odds.
The odds of being a winner of Prize Division 2 are 1 in 62,320 if you get 10 of the 13 right while the odds of winning (per entry) Prize Division 3 (11 correct predictions) are 1 in 5,110.
The chances of getting 10 match results correct and therefore winning Prize Division 4 is 1 in 697.
As mentioned, these are only the mathematical probabilities involved. Some of the games selected are going to be easier to predict than others.
