Everton Football Club is a custodian of top-flight English football. The Toffees are a founding member of the Premier League and have never been relegated from the division since its reform in 1992. With a rich history including old First Division titles, have Everton ever won the Premier League?
Despite their long tenure in the Premier League, Everton are yet to win a league title since its foundation in 1992.
The Toffees were 45 minutes away from relegation in 1993/94 when they found themselves 2-0 down to Wimbledon at half time. A second-half comeback saw the game turned on its head as Everton won 3-2 to preserve their top-flight status.
The club has only finished in the top five places in the league on four occasions, and it was in 2004/05 when they last finished fourth. Everton have been seemingly left behind by the new football elite but with Carlo Ancelotti now at the helm, there’s a renewed optimism that trophy could be heading to Goodison Park sooner rather than later.
Nine Old First Division Titles
Despite their lack of success during the Premier League era, Everton were one of the most successful sides before its inaugural season. The Toffees have nine old First Division titles in their trophy cabinet, with their last win coming in 1986/87.
Their first league title was won in the late 1800s. The Toffees pipped Preston North End to the title by two points, only losing twice at home throughout the entirety of the campaign.
Everton then became the final First Division champions before the postponement in football due to World War I in 1914/15. Four more league titles followed in 1927/28, 1931/32, 1938/39, and 1962/63.
The 1980s were a particularly good period for the Blues as they won their final two league titles to date during the decade. Their first came under Howard Kendall in 1984/85 where they beat their rivals Liverpool to the crown.
The Toffees finished 13 points clear of the Reds and scored 58 goals at Goodison Park throughout the entirety of the season. Liverpool regained their crown the following season, but Everton took it back at the end of the 1986/87 season.
Kendall once again led the Toffees to the First Division summit - but the club hasn’t won the league since.
Champions League Qualification Under David Moyes
During David Moyes’s first full season in charge of Everton, the club recorded their highest ever Premier League finish in fourth place.
Many had tipped the Blues to be relegated after finishing six points above the drop zone a season prior. However, Moyes had found the perfect formula to get the best out of the squad, with Tim Cahill finishing as Everton top goalscorer with 11 goals.
The arrivals of Mikel Arteta from Real Sociedad and James Beattie from Southampton helped bolster the squad in the winter transfer window as the club qualified for the UEFA Champions League Third Qualifying Round.
Everton’s Champions League journey was cut short the season after as the squad failed to beat Villarreal in the qualifying rounds and crashed out before the group stages.
Farhad Moshiri’s Takeover of the Club
In February 2016, wealthy businessman Farhad Moshiri bought a 49% stake in the club with the vision of transforming the team into one that could compete at the top of the league.
Everton have spent handsomely in the transfer market ever since, including purchases like £49million midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson. However, success on the field hasn’t followed, with the club currently employing its fourth manager since Moshiri’s arrival.
Ronald Koeman was the first to be appointed but his success was short-lived. The Dutchman recorded a seventh-placed league finish during his first campaign but was sacked the following season with Everton in the relegation zone.
Sam Allardyce was brought in to steady the ship, and despite keeping them in the Premier League comfortably, he was sacked and replaced by Marco Silva. The former Watford manager lasted a season and a half and was replaced by Ancelotti last term.
With a serial winner at the helm in the Italian, Everton fans believe that they have found the right manager to get them competing in the league once again.
